MONTEVIDEO, April 14 (Reuters) - An Uruguayan official said on Thursday that Russian energy heavyweights Gazprom (GAZP.MM) and LUKOIL (LKOH.MM) are eager to explore for oil and natural gas in the South American nation and join bidding on a regasification terminal. "The exploration of crude and gas was one issue and the other was the regasification plant and the sale of liquefied gas. In both cases (the companies) showed great interest," said Ramon Mendez, energy director at Uruguay's Energy Ministry, referring to a technical mission that traveled to Russia.
Bidding on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal that will supply Uruguay and neighboring Argentina should take place in May or June, according to comments made by Uruguayan President Jose Mujica in February.
